DESCRIPTION:As part of NTEN's Nonprofit Technology Conference (NTC) Kami Griffiths and Mary Ann Van Cura are co-convening an event that will bring together people across the country who are working to improve digital literacy. This event is free and open to locals and anyone interested, even if you're not attending the conference!\nEvent DescriptionTens of thousands of nonprofit and library professionals work each day to bridge the digital divide, but where are the bridges between the professionals? We're all so busy that it can be a challenge to step back and see what other people are doing that may be beneficial to our efforts to bring technology training and access to our communities. Join us during NTC where computer trainers, library staff, volunteers and program managers will share successes and challenges related to their work with digital inclusion, BTOP, and digital literacy training. Hear about national efforts to develop a resource portal that will help us all improve our programs. \nThursday, April 11, 2013, 4-6pm (Central Time)Minneapolis Hilton, The Gallery \n \nThere will be another gathering directly afterwards organized by Steven Clift. What creates "positive noise" rather than just adding to the chatter your community members experience day in and day out? \nPlease leave a comment here with any other related topics you might like to cover or questions we should address. \nHow to participate: Simply log onto Twitter on Tuesday from 1-2pm EST, search for hashtag #CommBuild, and dive in.\n--\nMore info: The CommBuild Community of Practice is focused on building and sustaining online and offline communities for nonprofits, charities, and other mission-based initiatives. DESCRIPTION:From this week's moderator, Elijah: \nStarting a community can be daunting, and growing it can be even harder. Join the #CommBuild-ers to learn from grizzled experts and share your secrets to community growth and success.\nJoin the tweet chat and follow the hashtag #commbuild.\nYOUR FACILITATOR\nElijah van der Giessen must be 100 years old, because he started doing Community Building back when "online social networks" consisted of email. Eli is the NetSquared Local Community Curator supporting a global volunteer network of 50 groups that each year hold over 450 events for the nonprofit technology sector. He's also been the volunteer coordinator for outdoor festivals, environmental NGOs and Canadian Idol.\nABOUT #COMMBUILD\nThese conversations are focused on issues and topics relevant to those working on community building or in community management roles. DESCRIPTION:From this week's moderator, Connie: \nWe all know at least a few of them; the social media phobics. They are certain that SM, at best, is a passing fad and has no place in their work. They may be co-workers, potential participants, board members, managers, or CEOs. They may decline to participate, lurk without participating, or they may actively discourage the use of SM in fulfilling an agency's mission.\nThis Tweet Chat will focus on strategies to convert the SM phobic to a SM embracer. \n \nJoin the tweet chat and follow the hashtag #commbuild.\n \nYOUR FACILITATOR\nConnie Hayek (@ckhayek) has been involved in building communities, systems of support, and information exchange networks throughout her career in child welfare. An early adopter of technology and social media, she was using both in building networks before most people had computers or internet access in their homes.\nIn the early 90's, Connie managed a project providing support and information to families of children with disabilities using discarded telephone hardware and dial-up lines to connect people. Similar to teletype machines, this hardware provided valuable support to families in rural areas with limited access to professionals or supportive peers. It has since grown to multiple on-line communities, interactive learning tools, and support programs in several SM venues.\nMeanwhile, Connie has moved on to independent consulting and now manages several on-line communities in various SM platforms in a quest to connect people with one another and resources that promote best practices. Along the way, she has met and worked with some hard-core SM phobics.\n \n \nABOUT #COMMBUILD\n \nThese conversations are focused on issues and topics relevant to those working on community building or in community management roles. They are open to anyone interested in learning and sharing about building community, on and offline, with the use of social media or other technology tools.

DESCRIPTION:Idealware is hosting and organizing NTEN's 501Tech Club in Maine. We want to convene Maine's thought leaders in nonprofit technology to talk trends, learn more, and have a little fun. \nWhat will be talking about in May?\n \n\nThe ABC's of Your Communications: A/B Testing for Better Results\n \nWhat is A/B testing and how can it affect your website, emails, and social media?\n \nSamuel Rich, Website Manager at the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (ASPCA), and Cullen McGough, Communications Director at Maine Cancer Foundation, will lead the discussion and outline how A/B testing has helped their organizations.\n \nIf your organization has seen the positive results of A/B testing, we'd love to hear your thoughts and outcomes. If A/B testing is a new concept for you, learn how your organization can benefit from this proven tactic with even just the basics. \n \nShare your ideas over drinks and snacks.\n\nWe hope to see you there.\n \nElevator access to the Idealware office is available through the Center St. entrance, on the side of the building.

DESCRIPTION:No matter how an organization engages with technology, planning is essential. Yet, as technologies keep changing faster and faster, how can a nonprofit organizatoin plan effectively and not fall behind the curve? Agile and iterative (or adaptive and incremental) methods have emerged as the most popular approaches for development and planning. Additionally, there are many resources available to assist in the planning process. In this clinic, we will take a deeper dive into technology planning and explore a few planning tools that can dramatically increase your chances for success on technology related projects.\nLecture Presentation: Introduction to agile and iterative project methodologies and important techniques. Overview of several free planning tools. Participants will leave with an understanding of agile and iterative processes for effective and efficient tech planning in their programs and organizations. \nParticipant Skill-Building Practice: Hands-on use of the free tools and implementation of techniques on real-world planning projects. Participants will leave with the ability to create and draft their own technology plan.\nFacilitator Kim Mahan, MAXX Potential\nKim started her first website business in 1996 and has been working with emerging technologies ever since. She has held IT positions with global responsibilities at GE Corporate, GE Industrial Systems, and Genworth Financial. Kim founded MAXX Potential in 2012 with a goal of providing affordable technology solutions to small business and nonprofits, while also growing the pool of technical talent in our region.
